A New Site for the 12th Century Garb List Archive

With the kind co-operation of Katalena Ivaniaia, the archives-in-progress of the old Yahoo Group “12th Century Garb List” has a new, permanent (I hope) home:

The pages I had already created during the first 10 days of this project have been transferred over there, and all new archive work will be posted there.  Furthermore, the site is flexible enough that it can be used going forward.

A Difficulty with the Archive Project

Good morning!  Seeing as it’s only 7am Eastern time here in Canada, all of my visitors so far today are from points farther east.  Welcome to those of you from New Zealand, Australia, Korea, Turkey, Sweden, and the UK who have taken the time to visit me.

I’m up early to get a start on my NaNoWriMo challenge of transcribing and curating the 12th Century Garb List archives.  Yesterday I got a good start, setting up several sub-pages of discussion.  This morning I have run into a challenge I have noted many times over the years in trying to use the archive — namely, that in the beginning, Yahoo Groups gave rather limited space for non-message content like photos and files.  That means that the list owner, moderators, and users tended to remove previously posted items in order to make room for new materials.  But, the discussions in the archive still contains the links, often referring pictures that are not there.  (Case in point, see “Pondering Cloaks and Sleeves” under “Theories & Image Analysis“). The discussions may be useful, but a bit vague without the point of reference.  I need to decide how to deal with that.

Saving the Archive

Years ago, when I first set out to make a 12th century dress for a role I would be playing, I discovered a Yahoo Group set up by a lady in Australia called the “12th Century Garb” list.  For many years, this was the go-to online gathering spot for those of us interested in the clothing of this century.  A lot of good information was shared there over the years.

Unfortunately, Yahoo is doing away with Groups — at least in the form as they have existed.  Groups will now function only as an email list service.  As of December 14, 2019 Yahoo will no longer host “user created content”.  That means the following things will be deleted:

  • Files
  • Polls
  • Links
  • Photos
  • Folders
  • Calendar
  • Database
  • Attachments
  • Conversations
  • Email Updates
  • Message Digest
  • Message History

In essence, all that made the 12th Century Garb list such a wonderful resource is disappearing. Therefore, I will be spending this month trying to save as much as I can.  While, of course, it is possible to simply download the entire archive somewhere, it will probably be more useful to comb through it and curate the posts by relevant information.  It is my intention to try to do that here, as “pages” of information.

I welcome comments, contributions, and all the well-wishing you wish to send me.  I will also be tracking this project on NaNoWriMo, mostly to hold myself accountable.
